FRENCH ENCIRCLING GERMAN POSTS EAST OF DOUAUMONT.
POWERFUL ENEMY ATTACK REPULSED. SLOPES COVERED WITH GERMAN DEAD. LONDON, February 28. The latest French communique states: "There has been a certain slackening of the enemy's efforts north of Verdun, except between Douaumont height and the plateau north of Vaux, where a powerful attack on our positions was repulsed. The slopes east of Douaumont are covered with German corpses. Our troops are closely encircling the enemy sections which obtained a foothold there, and the enemy is. holding the ground with difficulty. Artillery renders the Talon Hill untenable for us or the enemy. The Germans on the Woevre plain established contact with our outposts towards Blanzee and Moranville, ■whence his attempts to debouch towards Hill 255 failed. An enemy detachment in the Senones district was shelled and dispersed."
