A small fire broke out about 2.30 p.m. to-day in the foreliold of tlie Northern Company's steamer Tasmaii, lying alongside the Northern wharf. The Outbreak, which appeared to have started spontaneously in some sacking attached to a consignment of furniture, was very soon discovered, and the fire brigade, arriving promptly, extinguished it with little difficulty. Practically no damage appears to have been done to the hull or cargo by either fire or water, as the outbreak occurred at the very bottom of the hold,' and what water the brigade used escaped through the bilges. An- outbreak of fire occurred just after 11 o'clock last night in the cabinetmaker's -workshops of Mr. John F. Oarrigam, C 3, Union Street. The fire brigade quickly extinguished the outbreak,°but considerable damage wara done to the furniture stock in tJit> second stoTey of the .building, whore the outbreak occurred. It is considered probable that the fire was caused by the gas heater used for softening glue liaviug been inadvertently left alight. The stock "was insured in the Norwich Union office for £300, and the building in the Northern office for £100.
