LATER GERMAN ATTACKS BROKEN UP.

FRENCH LINE WITHDRAWN IN THE WOEVRE. ANOTHER HEAVY, SNOWSTORM ON THE BATTLEFIELD. ENEMY'S FALSE CLAIMS OF PRISONERS TAKEN. (Received 2.30 p.m.) PARIS, February 27. An official communique reports :-Our troops during the night continued to strengthen their positions north of Verdun. There is no change east of tbe Meuse, where a heavy snowfall has hindered operations. No fresh enemy attempts were made on Talou Hill or Poivre Hill. A strong enemy attack on Saturday evening at Haudromont Farm, east of Poivre Hill, was broken up by our artillery, machine guns and counterattacks. Another attempt, equally violent, on Hardaumont Wood, east of Douaumont, was equally fntile. Our advanced posts in the Woevre carried out their withdrawal unhindered. No infantry action was fought west of the Mense. A strong enemy attack on a two-mile front near Celles, north-west of Verdun, after artillery preparation, proved a complete failure. A French official message emphasised the false claims of the German commnniqnes. It affirms that the total number of French captured by the Germans was less than five thousand, although Germans alleged that ten thousand were taken.
