SOLDIERS IN HOSPITAL TO-GET MORE. Ft-equenfj representations have been made to the Auckland Patriotic Association that the allowance of the Defence Department to soldiers in bospjtalß is insufficient to meet the reasonable requirements of the men. Probably on the ground that there is a close association between the pocket and the stomach the military authorities have hitherto taken the view that 15/ -per fortnight is .enough by Way. of pocket. ; money for the men in hospital. . The Auckland Association, 'however, recognised that the rigid application of this rule entailed hardship in some cases: and .approached the Defence De--partment with a view to obtaining a modification of ihe. rule. . As. a result a letter' has now been "re?eeived by the Mayor, who is president of the Assbciafclon, from. General Robin, intimating that the Minister of De-\ fence has no objection to tie Patriotic Association advancing 15/ per fortnight' to the men against their pay, providing that it is immediately stopped if the medical superintendent cif the hospital notifies that it is desirable iii the interests of the health of the patient. The advance will he made about the 7th and 2lßt of each month, and the refund will be made by the Quartermaster-General. If the arrangement proves satisfactory in Auckland it is proposed to extend it" fee other centres...
