FOOTBALL.
BUGBY. That California University -win be ■eventually compelled to return to Rugby, as the result of the many injuries incurred in. the inter-ooSlegiate game and .the . interference of, the arduous practice ■with itudiei, v 'is^jth* , interesting suggestion, *&?4e • by -\ liarry Maloney, the .SfeuifoT& 'coach,.' in the course of an article on football in the current "Sequoia.":—' "It ia not likely ,that California will return to Rugby next y.eax unless she sacrifices her obligations to Washington University. That she -will return to Rugby eventually I have no' doubt," he says. "Public sentiment throughout the country -will again demand before long that drastic changes 'be made in the inter-colkgiate (American) game. The game is getting more and mare complicated each year, and demands in college circles far moie time than a student can conscientiously devote to eport. As it is now, the inter-collegiate game i 3 a •business' and not a 'sport. . Again; the game is too dangerous to life and limb. - "Trne, there have not been 34 dea±h3 and 175 severely injured in. one season since the people arose almost en masse against the game a few years ago, when Imany changes took place in the game, which eliminated some of its' objectionable features. Still statistics show that the death rate is increasing again. Last year it was 14 deaths, and this year, according to statistics,. 16 have met their deaths on the" football field, all from causes arising from injuries received in the games."
