AMERICA A RECRUITING GROUND. SET TOWARDS THE PACIFIC. PROPOSED MISSION FOR MR POOLE
During last session the question of the neglected appearance of the sanatorium and other Government buildings at Hotorua was brought before Parliament by Mr C. H. Poole. M.P. It was then pointed out by the Minister in Charge of the Tourist Department that a large ex- ( penditure of public money in that direction was hardly warranted at the present time, owing to the effect of the war upon the tourist traffic. The Tourist Department is aware, however, of the fact that owing to the war there is very little tourist movement towards Europe, from the United States, but that rather the set is towards the Pacific, and boats leaving San Francisco for Honolulu are crowded with moneyed travellers who are spending their vacation time in the Hawaiian Islands.
The Hon. Dγ McXab pointed out when the matter was under consideration that good service could be rendered by a representative of the Dominion visiting the States and speaking about the tourist attractions in New Zealand. He suggested that in preference to participating in the making of munitions or recruiting work in Great Britain (a course which he had in contemplation). it might be possible for the member for Auckland West to take a flying: trip through America nnd induce visitors to come this way. Following on the Minister's statement, representations were made by the Rotorua Tourist League to the Hon. Dr McXab during his recent visit to the thermal regions, that a progressive advertising policy should be introduced and that Mr Pool? should be asked to undertake this mission to America. A nominal subsidy has since been voted by the Rotorua League for this purpose. Mr I'oole. asked what hie impressions were in connection with this proposal, stated: "I do not want to be away from New Zealand just now. but if 1 can render any service 1 am prepared to consider the Departmental proposal. For some time my mind has been made up to assist in the recruiting nnd munitions work of Great Britain in view of the development of the spring campaign, but owing to the possibility of an early session, so far 1 have hesitated. My services have been offered for local munitions work, and I have endeavoured to take an interest in local recruiting, but the new proposal gives mc a chance to help our tourist enterprise and at the same time visit Great Britain for two or three months' campaign work before the new session starts. Every member in the Legislature has given serious consideration to what service he can best render at this critical time, and personally I have definitely decided to undertake come practical service that will bo of benefit to the general cause of national freedom. Should any ■ definite course materialise, I feel certain that .my colleagues would be glad to watch the interests of my constituency until my return in time for next session.'
