0.8. —Up to the. end of the seventeenth century the Crown" usually contracted with a distinguished soldier who acted as colonel of the regiment he enlisted, and the soldier usually contracted for life, although shorter engagements were made for the duration of a war. But by the Enliatmeat Act of 1870 men were, enlisted for" twelve years, which might be spent partly in the Army and partly in the reAerve. After twelve years' service soldiers might be allowed to re-engage for nine rears and then retire on pension.
