APPEAL BY THE MAYORESS.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR THE FRONT,

The Mayoress (.ilrs. J. H. Gunson), writes-.— "At the instance of her Excellency tile Countess of Liverpool, I appealed l&*t month for waUtcoate for our boys at the front. The response was splendid. Auckland did its t-hare. " The appoal for Christmas gifts for the boys of the New Zealand forces abroad is now before us. The Mayoresses of Wellington, Christehurch. and Dunedin respectively have undertaken to supply a gift to a number sufficient for every boy from their district. I liavp agreed to undertake a similar work in Auclaad. In thiH way all th? boys of the New Zealand Forces will receive a Christmas jrift. The gifts *ent officially are sure to reach our boy*, whereas the individual dispatch ie uncertain, i " I. therefore, now appeal to the generosity of the people of the Auckland provincial district for a "Christmas Gift" for each of our brave soldiers at too front. Each one w-ill be. doubtless, thinking of home, and it will help to cheer and encourage greatly to know that not only their own home folk, but the people of the whole Dominion arc thinking of them at this time. " The committee set up to provide these gifts have decided to pack up compact articles, which will be of use and Sive pleasure; each man's gift in a tin billy. What thought* of home will be conjured up -while the billy boils." Iho gift will include chocolate, a pipe, tobacco, cigarettes, handkerchiefs (already f-upplied by school children), boiled sweets in tins, socks, bootlaces, etc., all of which will be purchased with the money received as the result of this appeal. Thp approximate cost of each gift will bo 5/. and of the billy 1/. ■'Will, therefore, all who appreciate the noble services of our boys at the front kindly assist in a practical way by forwarding 5/ for a Christmas gift, or 1/ for a billy to contain same? " Any number of gilts will be acceptable; £5 will, of course, provide 23 gifts. Hill donors of small sums kindly sent postal notes for convenience? "At least 0,000 gifts wfll be required. Each tnft will contain a Christmas card inscribed. Hearty greetings for Xnias from the people of Auckland." "Please address all remittances to 1-he Mayoress. Town Hall. Auckland, , and mark outside ' Xmas Gift. , "Contributions wiU also be received n cash at the Women's Patriotic League. Town Hall "
