ALLIES STILL GAINING
FRENCH PUSH THEIR ATTACK ENEMY'S COUNTER MOVES FAIL FIERCE FIGHTING IN RUSSIA GERMANS DRIVEN BACK BY BAYONET
Latest reports indicate that the French are steadily maintaining their offensive in the Champagne region, and that new positions are still being captured. The British have maintained their gains in the La Bassee-Lens area, and have recaptured trenches which they temporarily lost. They have now consolidated their new line, and safely held it against night counterattacks. The Germans admit they have been driven back at three points, but assert that the losses are unimportant, and that counter-attacks are proceeding. It is reported from Rotterdam that the German General Staff is preparing to make one more great effort in the west. On the Russian front the Czar's forces are steadily moving westward in the south, while in the north they are still holding the enemy. The Germans have issued an order to the army impressing on them the necessity for capturing Dvinsk, but latest indications do not point to their wish being gratified.
