The Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Railwaye, is visiting Rotorua to-day to open a new courthouse. Air. G. C. B. Gordon, Under-Secretary for Justice, has been gazetted a member of the Prisons Board. Lieut. W. B. Ferriday, of "Whangarei, is in Auckland, and leaves on Monday for Trcntham to join the new rifle regiment. The Very Rev. Chancellor Price has received a cablegram from Rev. Father Richarde, stating hp was leaving Cairo for Gallipoli; also that Father McMcnamill was ill, and Father Dore had been wounded. Rev. Professor Dickie, who lias filled the Chair of Theology at Knox College, intends to apply for leave to return to Scotland to make application f° r the Chair of Systematic Theology in Aberdeen Theological College. Mr. A. L. Miller, M.A.. a student of Knox College, will be ordained at Milton Presbyterian Church to-morrow. Mr. Miller is going out to the Canton Vil- i lages Mission as a special representative of the Milton congregation. He will accompany the Rev. (.). 11. McNear a;-~ Mrs. McNear when they return to Canton. Mr J. L. Kirker, Auckland manager of the British Dominions General Insurance Co., Ltd., will be leaving for Trenthara (amp on Monday with the Ninth Draft of non commissioned officers. His pofcition with the "British Dominion" will be kept open for him, and Mr H. C. Stoduart, manager for New Zealand of the company, is now in Auckland arranging for the control of the business during his absence. Mr. George Rowe, who hae been a Customs officer in Auckland for 23* years, retired from the service last Tue3day, having attained the age of 65 years. Mr. Rowe is a well-known and popular figure in shipping circles, and his many friende have presented him with a 400-day clock, suitably engraved, in appreciation of his services. Mrs. Rowe was the recipient of a handsome biscuit barrel. Mr. J. H. Langley, who leaves for Trentham to take up a non-com, position in the Ninth Contingent, has had many years' experience in volunteering. He learnt to shoot when a member of the old Victoria Rifles, afterwards was in the Auckland Navals and the Submarine Miners. Mr. Langley is a good shot, and waa holder of the Champion Belt for several years, as well ac the Cup. Mr. James Lunn, sen., who died recently at Pakawau, arrived in Nelson with the first ships arriving there. Aβ the old gentleman used to say he arrived "when the Fifeshire was on the rocks at the entrance to Nelson Harbour." the date is fixed at 1842. He was then a well-grown youth, and must have been about 90 years of age when he died. Mr. J. L. Davis, of the Gisborne staff of Messrs. Arch. Clark and Sons, has been transferred to Auckland. During the three and a half j-ears Mr. Davis was at Gisborne he took a prominent position in mimical circles, being a violinist of proved ability in local orchestral combinations. Mr. C. Fynmore, of the Lands and Survey Department, retiree on superannuation j>tt the!'j3oth of 1 next month. He was appointed, in August, J867, as cadet clerk and draughtsman in the General Road Boards Department, which at that time consisted of a commissioner of roads, a chief clerk, and two surveyors. In 1876, when the provinces were abolished, Mr. Fynmore was transferred to the Survey Department. There was a large gathering of the commercial staff and representatives of other departments of the "Auckland, Star" in the manager's room on Friday afternoon for the purpose of making a presentation and saying farewell to Mr. R. J. Strong, who, after a long period of service in the advertising department is about to proceed to the United States to pursue his studies at the New Church College in Boston. Sir. Wm. Beaumont, ex-manager, made the presentation, and added some remarks highly complimentary to Mr. Strong. These were supplemented by the good wishes of various branches expressed by Messrs. W Mitchell, J. A. Sherrifl\ A. S. Beid, and A. D. Seabrook. and suitably acknowledged by Mr. Strong, who stated that he hoped to return to Auckland about two years hence.
