THE LATE AUSTRALIAN COMMANDER.
BURIED AT CANBERRA. AN IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL. SYDNEY, September 3. Prior to the placing of the remains of the late General Bridge? on the train for Canberra, a special service was held in St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne. It was attended by the Governor-General, the State Governor, members of Parliament, naval and military officers, and a great congregation. Archbishop Clarke, in his address, paid an impressive tribute to the late soldier. I Great crowds lined the route from tho Cathedral to tho railway station. The miltary escort included a company of wounded soldiers. A special train conveyed the coffin to Canberra. The general was buried with full military honours, upon a crest overlooking Duntroon College. The pallbearers were Admiral Creswell, leading military officers, the Prime Minister. Mr. Fisher, Senator Pearce, Minister for Defence, and Mr. Cook, Leader of the Opposition. General Bridge's charger was led behind the gun carriage bearing the coffin. The latter was smothered in beautiful wreaths. The Primate, Dr. Wright, in a sympathetic address, said: "It is good that our soldier hero should have a last restingplace nt a spot within the precincts of the college so dear to his heart. From his grave we turn to the high duty fronting us. It is a tremendous task to secure victory in the war. His voice, and the voices of his comrades who fell with him, call in triumphant tones. We must shrink from no sacrifice. We must finish at any price what they have begun at so great a cost." General Bridges is the first soldier killed on a battlefield to be buried on Australian soil. I
