THE GALLANT ATTACK
ON SLOPES OF SARI BAIR. : COLONIALS' INKERMAN. PEAGE MURMURS IN WASHINGTON EMANATING FROM GERMANY. The spirited story of the Allied great attack upon the Anafarta Hills from the pen of Mr. Ashmead Bartlett is continued to-day. The great attempt failed of entire success, owing apparently to the failure of a single division to carry out its share of the work, but, though complete success was not achieved-, the results were of great importance. The enemy's losses were terrific, and the magnificent fighting qualities of the Anzacs were fully revealed. Vague proposals of peace, believed to have emanated from Germany, have been transmitted to Washington, but President Wilson says that he will have nothing to do with negotiations which are not directly addressed to him from the belligerent countries. The Austriana have evacuated Roveredo, in the Trentino, after destroying the historic monuments of the town. Reinforcements totalling 200.000 have been sent to the Italian front by the Austrian^. A French communique denies the German statement that Lingekopf and Barrenkopf, in the Vosges, have been recaptured. The Germans seized 200 metres of their old position, and made this the foundation for the statement that both these fortress hills had been retaken.
