PRACTICAL PATRIOTISM.
ASK FOR BRITISH GOODS. j Mr. S. J. Harbutt. president o.' tne Industrial Association, addressed the meeting on the subject of "Trade Within the Empire.' - Our j patriotism, he said was only a miserable i pretence if we did not encourage trade i within the Empire. Had we boon fully patriotic we might not lie mourning the , loss of our soldiers who had fallen within j recent months. j In IWO. said the speaker. Germany | had little foreign trade. The secret o; | a German's patriotism was that he was taught from his infancy that he must , bay articles of German manufacture. !f | half tbe goods imported to New Zealand | had been manufactured in the Dominion , it would have given employment to the I inhabitants of another city the size of j Dunedin. In 101.1. we imported practie- j ally C 1.000.000 worth of goods from j Germany and Austria. Price had weighed with us more than patriotism. Unfair! trade methods such as subsidised steam j ers had helped the German article, and] the German Government had realised i that it would tie an advantage to pay for I the building up of manufactures, so that i when "the day" came the machinery i could be turned to account for the manu facture of munitions. | Mr. Harbutt appealed for prirtirnl i patriotism in preference to flag waving There was an absolute prejudice against j some New Zear!and-madc and Brttwii- ! made articles. This had to bo combated I When we sent money to a foreign coun j try. we were doing an injustice to some one in our own country. I Applause! \t the suggestion of the president of ' the League (Miss E. Melville) a resolii- j tion was carried, on the mot-on af Mrs. ' F. E. Raums, seconded by Mj». Grass-1 miin-i. heartily affirming the principle of j trading within the Empirr. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded j the speakers.
