POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr. E. C. Cut-ten, S.M.) • | DRUNKENNESS. 7 Four first offenders were fined 5/ each, in . default 24 hours' imprisonment. Richard Bryant (37) was fined 10/, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. MT. ALBERT MISDEMEANOURS. For cycling on footpaths in the Mt. Albert borough, Ray McDonald and G. Cox had each to pay 17/6 costs, while Thomas Oxenham was convicted and discharged. Arthur Page, who had ridden a motor cycle on the footpath of the Qnehunga-Mt. Albert Road, stated that it was very difficult to discern any difference between the footpath and the road, while tho steam roller and other repair appliances on the road had caused him to move over to the side. He was ordfered to pay 52/6 costs, as also was Q. Stevenson, who had driven a motor on the footpath at the same place for similar reasons; while T. H. Hall, who had driven a cart on the footpath, wast fined 20/ andf 17/0 costs. W. Howe, for causing a horse to stand on a footpath, was ordered To pay 17/fi costs. H. C. Warrington, for not having registered a dog which persisted in regarding hia place as its home, and in staying round the house, despite the fact that he had taken it to Birkenhead and given it away, was held to be responsible, and was ordered to pay 17/0 costs. THE CASE OF STOREY. Percy Wiliaru Storey (25) was charged that he was an idle and disorderly per"son, with insufficient means of support. Chief Detective MacMahon asked that accused be remanded for a week for medical observation. The conduct of accused, he Baid, had been very peculiar for some time, and it was considered necessary to have him under observation. 7 Mr. A. Moody, for Storey, opposed the remand. If the police had any doubt t abdut the man's sanity, why should they not dispose of the present charge now, and then make application for his reception to a mental hospital. The man was arrested on one charge, and had. made- all arrangements for his defence, and then, at tho last moment, this application was sprung upon him. His Worship stated that the. question of a man's sanity was relevant to any charge that might be preferred against, him, but if Counsel particularly desired it, the police could make the application to have accused examined immediately, and the .vagrancy charge could be proceeded with immediately after the examination. This course was taken, but after the medical examination, it was agreed that accused be remanded for a week for medical treatment. FOR PERJURY. Two young men. Albert Loekhead and Joseph Krrowles. who had been witnesses for the defence in the perjury case Rex. v. Maule, at the Supreme Court, at which the defendant was convicted, were charged that in their evidence, in corroboration of Maule's evidence, they had committed perjury. Both accused pleaded "guilty," and were com-rritted to "the Supreme Court for sentence. X-AHSEORS AND TENANT. , A .dispute between landlord, and tenant! was ventilated in the Auckland Magistrate's Court yesterday -afternoon,- when Mrs. A. Wells, who admitted a claim for 13/6 Tent, counter-claimed for £4\ 15/6 from John Henry Hannan for repairs effected to the property she occupied. Mrs. Wells, who was represented by Mr. W. A. Black, told the Court that the house she occupied in Federal Street was in very bad repair, and the repairs I were executed under. Mr. Hannan's authority. The repair's included the. putting, in.'of panes of glass and window I sashes, the building of a porch, paper- | hanging, and improvements to the roofing. Mr. Hannan denied having authorised... thc_ .repairs, and maintained an account rendered by Mm. Wells carried its own regulation. A nonsuit was entered on the counter-claim. MISCELLANEOUS. •Ah Charley, Ah Tong and Ah Lee, for working on Sunday in their market garden, within view of a public road, were fined 5/ "and 7/ costs each. John Hetherington, for beating a jibbing horse cruelly, was fined 10/ and 12/ costs. John Spain, for dispersing a printed paper headed "Waterside Workers," which had no imprint, wa* fined £5, and 7/ costs. George A. Millar, charged with having deserted the ship El Cordobcs in January, was remanded till to-morrow.
