Woodland FuUwood, the well known English photographer, who took the above excellent picture of the cruder Glasgow recently in the harbour of Rio do Janeiro, in forwarding it makes the comment :-"I consider the Glasgow the pluckiest boat of the war." A few weeks later the Glasgow again got almost within striking distance of the Karlsruhe off the Cuban coast but the German commander, taking the risk of total destruction, fled through reef-sown seas and escaped ler clutches. Then she was sent round into the Pacific to assist the ill-fated squadron which was destroyed off Coronel. From that fight sh e escaped wUh several shotholes ,n her upper works, and after repairs had been effected she joined Admiral Sturdee's squadron which trapped Yon Spec off the Falklands. The Glasgow got some of her own back on- that occasion, by forcing the Leipzic to alter her course, thus bringing her under the guns of the Cornwall, which quickly settled her fate The necessity for this manoeuvre enabled the Dresden to escape aud once again the Glasgow rounded the Horn in pursuit. She was with the squadron which came up w,th the Dresden off Juan Fernandez last week, and her shells were the first to rattle against the sides of the doomed raider Tho Glasgow is a protected cruiser of 4,800 tons, belongs to what is known as the'-Town" class, has a speed of 25 knots, and carries two 6-in. as well as ten 4-in! quick-firers.
