Mr and Mrs H. S. Moss, of Sydney, are paying a visit to Xew Zealand, and are staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. John Bollard, who for many years represented the Eden electorate in the House of Representatives, died last night, at the age of 75 years. The Prime Minister will endeavour to complete some urgent business to-day so 'as to leave tihi« evening for Auckland to attend the funeral of the late Mr. John iloUxrd, who was an old personal friend of Mr. MaKwcy. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rogers, of Epsom, ; returned from a holiday visit to Wellington by the Main Trunk express yesterday. | Mr. H. J. Wynne, chief electrical engineer to the Government Railway I Department, is at present in Auckland and is staying at Cargen. Mr Harold Buckland, of Messrs. A and T. Burt, Ltd., has returned from a month's holiday in the South. With Mrs Buckland he paid a visit to the Lakes District of Otago. Mr and Mrs H. E. Finney, of Chicago, and Mt James Morton, of New York, American visitors who have been touring Xew Zealand, arc staying at the Grand Hotel prior to departure on Friday by tbe Niagara. Mr Robert Laidlaw, of Laidlaw, Leeds, Ltd., will leave by the Niagara on Friday on a four months' tour abroad, during which he will visit the San Francisco j Exhibition. Mr Laidlaw*s colleagues on the V.M.C.A. Board of Directors took the .opportunity last night to wish him bon | voyage. His duties as chairman of the Physical Committee will be undertaken during his absence by Mr R. H. Horsley, j the honorary treasurer of the Association. I The wife of Admiral Sir Frederick Doveton Stuidee is a Melbourne lady. At the time of their marriage the distinguished sailor (who was not then so well known as he is now) was in command of the Porpoise in Australian waters. The death took place yesterday of Mr. Thomas Vincent, a well known millwright and contractor, who had been associated with the firm of Mr. H. H. Metcalfe for the past 30 years. Deceased was about 75 years of age, and was widely known and respected.

Major A. H. Herbert, who has been appointed to succeed Major Peacock in the command of the Maori Contingent, is a Territorial officer, having been attached to the 9th (Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles. He sailed with the third reinforcement draft. Major Peacock was an officer of the N.Z. Staff Corps, and was for some time Adjutant to the North Auckland Infantry Regiment.

Mr. W. A. Gray and Mr. D. Holderness, of Auckland, have received notice that at the last examination conducted by the Institute of Civil Engineers for its aesociateship, they both received "honourable mention." This high distinction has fallen this year to the lot of only two out of about 100 candidates, drawn from all parts of the Empire, and both of these are Aucklandcrs.

The Rev. J. Clover, Methodist minister in tbe Hamilton circuit, was presented with a travelling rug by member! of the Hamilton East congregation on Monday night. Mr. Clover leaves in a few days for his new circuit at Waiuku.-

It is intended to hold a combined farmers' picnic at the Rnakura State Farm on Wednesday, the 31st met,,. when a presentation will be made to Mr. Primrose McConnell, who is resigning his position as manager of the farm.
