A MILITARY DESERTER.

TO BE COURT-MABTIALLED. A man named John Corkin, aged 41 years, came beforelMr_P.*V. Frazerv&M-j this morning on.a charge that on October 10 he deserted from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and pleaded "Guilty" to the (marge. Chief-detective McMahon Btated thai when the Expeditionary Force were leaving Auckland, en route to Egypt, Corkin was a member of the Force, and his effects, with those of the other members, were put aboard the troopship Waimana. Evidently, however, CorMn came to the conclusion, said the detective, that he was getting too-close to the powder, and he left. Under the Defence Act Amendment Act he- was made amenable -to the Imperial Army Act, which directed for such offence he-should be dealt -with by court-martial, so that the •procedure to be here followed evidently was to hand the prisoner over to the military authorities. His Worship agreed that the proper course was to hand the prisoner over to be dealt with by military law. He, personally, could not, and had-ho desire to, deal with t£is- charge, and lie accordingly directed that the prisoner be handed over to the authorities. Corkin was at once placed under a military guard that was'present and marched away to the military.detention camp at 'Fort'Cautleyl." "."-"" ' Z'Z'.Z.
