MEETINGS.

OTAHCHC BOROUG& COUNCIL. The Otabubu Borough Council held their fortnightly meeting In the Council Chamber on Monday evening last. The Mayor (Mr. A. Sturgcs) presided. Present: Councillors Hall, Atkinson, O'Hara, McMullen, Lowe, Brady and Wilson.

New Road to Saleyards.—The town clerk stated that everything was arranged regardIng the new road from Seddon Terrace to the saleyards, and the engineer was authorised to proceed with the work at once.

Remission of Rates.—Mr. H. Fearnley, hon. sec. of Sailing Club, wrote asking for a remission of rates. It was agreed that the rates of both the Sailing Club and the Rowing Club be remitted.

Station Road Tip.—lt was agreed that the tip in Station Road be closed, and a more suitable place be found.

Portage Road.—lt was agreed that tenders be called for the formation of thirteen cbnins of footpath in Portage Koad. Borough Reserves.—The town clerk stated that all the reserves in the borough were now under the control of the Borough Council.

Water Supply.—A letter was read from the Mayor of Onehunga referring to his remarks re water supply of the Otabuhu borough. He eaid he was not responsible for newspaper reports, and that what he did say was that neither Otahuhu nor Mangere's supply could be looked upon as permanent.

Overdue Rates.—The Legal and Finance Committee authorised the town clerk to take immediate proceeding for recovering of outstanding rates. The amount outstanding was £136 against £70 at the same time last year. Councillor Brady thought It was a hardship to exact the 10 per cent, penalty before the end of March. The Mayor said the council had no power to remit the 10 per cent, as a whole, but explained that any particular case would be considered, and If necessary, a remisslou could be allowed. Reservoir Site. —Councillor Atkinson re- ' ported as to the proposed new reservoir site, nnd said they could only recommend one site, the Panama Hills. Tbe committee reported that the tank at water tower was still leaking, and that a site tor a reservoir must be fixed on. SCRIPTURE GIFT ASSOCIATION. The thirty-eighth year of the Auckland Scripture Gift Association, whlcli hae just concluded, has, according to the annual report, been a most satisfactory one, and much good work has been accomplished. The report states that the circulation of beneficial reading is still extending, and that new opportunities for distribution in country localities are found continually opening up. Libraries of Sunday schools have received special aid In gifts of boobs, and In this branch of the work that class of literature which tends toward characterforming is tbe main aim of the Society. School libraries have been aided with gifts of books to the number of To, while in prizes awarded to school children for the committal to memory of portions of Scripture 495 books have been donated by the Association. In addition to these tbe distribution of books has comprised 326 Bibles, 71 Testaments, a number of gospels, and 353 volumes to various institutions. As has been done in former years, factory lunch-rooms, cabins of steamers, ships' crews, workmen's camps, country homes, hospitals, etc.. have been supplied with beneficial reading. The statement of acconnts for the past /ear shows a credit balance in the bank of £U 8/.
