From Rome comes news of the death of Cardinal Agliardi. Mr. J. Okerbloom, of Sydney, was a passenger by the Niagara on a visit to New Zealand. ■Mr. J. A. Pickett, of Melbourne, is spending a few days in Auckland, having arrived by the Niagara. Bishop Averill held a confirmation service at the Thames yesterday, and is returning to Auckland to-day. Mr. W. B. Scott, of Opotiki, proprietor of the Bast Goat* "Timw," arrived in Auckland yesterday, and is staying at Oargen. The Rev. W. A. Butler, of Stratford, was a passenger by the Maheno yesterday on his return from a visit to England. Mr. E. H. Hiley, General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, left on his return to WeUington by the express on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Milsom, accompanied by their son, Mr. J. L. Milsom, arrived by the Niagara from Sydney on a holiday visit. They intend doing some fishing at Taupo. They arc at present stopping at the Grand Hotel. Mr. George Hoskins, of the firm of Messrs. G. and C. Dr. Frazer-Hurst (Medical Superintendent of Whangarei Hospital) left Whangarei on Saturday for Trentham, en route for the front." ' A private cablegram received from Sydney announces the death of Mr. John Jackson Calvert, 1.5.0., in his eighty-fifth year. The deceased was Clerk of the New South Wales Parliament for many years, having been appointed to that position in 1871. He was also president of the New South Wales Rugby Union for thirty-two years, and was for some time on the council of the first Royal Agricultural Society of the State.
