Autumn .Meeting; (4) Official times for races are taken from the judge's box, the timekeeper being in the box with the judge. The Auckland Gun Club hold a big shoot on their grounds at Ellerslle on Wednesday, the 31st last. There Is gome talk of the much talked of Dl Gama being brought'back to the Dominion in time for the Wellington Racing Club's Autumn Meeting. R. Hatch, who recently finished a twelve months' suspension, has been relicensed by the Wellington District Committee, and intends to resume riding. The victory ol Cloudy bawn at Faeroa on Wednesday has earned him a penalty of 71b for the A.R.C. Brighton Hurdles, which brings his weight up to 11.1. The Auckland-owned colt Prince Akwood is going on satisfactorily in his work at Cnristchurch, under H. Hendricksen. and all being well, will be a starter in the New Brighton Derby. The C.J.-C. National winner. Captain Jingle, was brought back to Wellington during the week, but his racing days are over, and he i will in future be used as a hack. Gloy, which is fancied in certain quarters for the Brighton Hurdles, is down for an engagement in the hurdles at Paeroa this afternoon, in which he had 10.3. A victory would earn him a 71b penalty, but even then his weight would only be 9.11. Dancastor Is running unluckily at present, ami the son of Salvadan had to put up with second honours again at Paeroa, when he finished In that position in the Maiden Handicap to Blucfonn. Although there has been Rome very wet mornings, usually some trainer" has been found venturesome enough to work tfls team at Ellerslle, but on Thursday morning, up tin 8.30 a.m.. not a hool had disturbed the tracks. This is a record according to the "Old Resident." The haiidk-appers nre a long time getting the strength of I.ady Mlddlcton. The daughter of Gluten has now won seven or eight mces. and bus only once been out of n place since I'hrlstmas, but Is still weighted under Dst. gome horses fail to impress although they keep on winning, while others only score, once and they are at the top of the tree. After a loug absence from the racing track. Domino was down for an engagement in the OUincninrl Cup on Wednesday. Before raring started the trnck was very hard, and Mr Ring would not take any risk, and the son of Freedom was withdrawn. By the time the Cup was run. however, the rain had done its work, and the jcronnd was all in favour of the tender unes, Leonta's running at Wanganui gave the Impression that with ordinary luck he would not he long in getting on the winning list, and this promise the son of Conqueror duly bore ont, winning the Mastcrton Cup on Thursday, going out a good favourite. Lmnta Is a fine big horse, and just tbe sort to win the Great Northern Hurdle race, for be Is a fine stayer. A Melbourue paper says:—"When George Scoble. who has just returned from a sojourn in New Zealand, was asked if he would sign a petition against the totallsator being Introduced in Victoria, he not only readily assented, but expressed a desire to write a note condemning the machine, of which he had more than enough In New Zealand." Webfoot, which gave promise of being decidedly useful over the big country, but which went amiss and had to be thrown out of work, made bis reappearance under silk at Paeroa on Wednesday. The son of Captain Webb looked big nnd well, but only got to tbe double in front of tbe stand, when he whipped off and took no further part in the race. The Gluten gelding Barbwirc made his Bret appearance as a steeplechaser on Wednesday, when he was sent out to contest the Paeroa Steeplechase. Barbwlre Jumped exceptionally well, going as straight as conld be wished. He was made a lot of use of, and though he dropped back about half a mile from borne, came again In tbe concluding stages, and was only just beaten for second honours. The most discussed candidate tor the Easter Handicap at present is King Lupin, and as usual with horses trained In private, all sorts of stories are afloat as to wonderful trials he Is doing. It is wonderful how such yarns originate, and they must provide amnsetnvnt for those most concerned. At any rate. King Lupin Iβ now favourite, and sneb a brilliant horse must have a great chance. Although Gloy won tbe Ohlnemurl Cup fairly easily, there Is no doubt but that Phosphorus was somewhat unlucky or he would have given the eon of Gluten a bit more trouble. Phosphorus was sent out an odds-on favourite, but never seemed at home in the going, and appeared to be slipping and sliding all over the place. Leaving the' straight he was nearly down, and under the circumstances bis backer* got a good run for their money. Although Blueform has been In work for some time, he has not been asked to do much racing, bis trainer, Norman ..Canningham, havtng given htm ever; opportunity to mature, and therefore it Iβ not altogether surprising that his victory at Paeroa on Wednesday was the Atst to his credit. Blueform looked real well when he went to the post, and McFllun. who rode him 4jjlh overweight, getting him out first, never let the fleld get near him, aud he eventually won very easily. Since Christmas Gloy has put up. something of a record in the winning of cups, three, the Whangarei. Northern Wairoa and Ohinemurt Cops, falling to the son of Gluten. At Ohinemuri on Wednesday Gloy, which has earned a reputation as a horse of moods, was in galloping humour, and very early in the race it could be seen that.he was going to be very.hard to beat. A&oot half a mile from heme Robinson got nlnvthrongh on the rails, and be ran to the front in a most, generous, manner,; «*entnally wlnninx, aksely from the-tayojnsrj

The wen-known performer Kilts was recently disposed'of in Cbristcburch for 30gs. It is reported that a Cbrietchnrch agent was after Gold Soalt recently, but so far no business- has reunited. The withdrawn! of Waratep from the C.J.C Easter Handicap came as some surprise, for with 9.» she could not be said to be harshly treated. The Auckland-owned nlly Chime has been left in the .Challenge- Stacee, to be run at Rlccarton at Easter, tout forfeit has evidently* been orerlooked, a rather costtt oversight these daye. Cloudy Dawn, which won the Handicap. Hurdles at Paeroa on Wednesday, and Coronade, the.winner of the steeplechase, won the same events at last year's gathering, the latter then being known as Rapid. It is not often that a race like the Ontnemiiri Cup does not have a runner that took part In the event the previous) year, but on Wednesday not one of the starters bad previously contested the race. A. Oliver, the well known horseman wlio is at present under suspension, has been notified by the Wanganui District Club to apply for his license again on May 5. F. Davis has engaged seven boxes at Green -Lane, and is expected to arrive with his team for the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting early next week. Mr. Menzies, the Victorian Racing Club's handlcappcr, Is acting for the Victoria Amateur Turf, Club, until a successor to Mr. Maitland has been appointed. The Auckland lightweight R. B. Brown, who does not often Journey south, was riding at the Masterton meeting, steering Martingale to victory in the Dash Hack Handicap. It is understood that the stewards of the Nelson Jockey Club have granted the lightweight horseman A. Reed a* rehearing in the case in which he was disqualified for alleged obvious pulling at the club's recent meeting. The Thames gelding, Brown .Loch, was a strong tip for the Komata Handicap at Paeroa on Wednesday, but after running prominently in the early stages faded away, and eventually finished out of a place. Brown .Loch is a good sort, and should turn out useful. At a sale of thoroughbred stock in Melbourne on Marcn 5. a two-year-old chestnut Dlly by Wallace from the great New Zealand mare. Cr'nciform, was disposed of to Mr. John Tyson for jOOgns. A Tnsmauion hamlicapper is in the unique position at present of baring been requested to explain the weighting of no less than three horses In one race, all the property of different owners. The race was au event for two-year-olds. At the recent Wmiganul Cup Meeting, the experiment was tried of running a 10/ totalisator, but owing to the limited accommodation It was not a financial success. Under the circumstances, the club have decided to do away with Bie Innovation until more accommodation can be secured. A Wellington resident, who returned from Australia during the week, states that Di ■fiama's failures at the Australian Cup Meeting cost bis New Zealand followers a lot of monei. Di Gama is stated to be t under oflcr to a patron of the Cnnlflcld trainer, C. Wheeler. .The Thames trainer-James Twobill is still having a bad run with his team, both Catherine and Glnetanue being on the easy i list, and the only one in active work is the two-year-o:d Declare, by Marble Arch— Lady Clare. This youngster is somewhat backward, but may he given a run at the A.R.C. Autumn Meeting. A feature in connection with the Obinemurl Cup was that out of the eleven carded no less than nine traced their breeding to the Glenora Park stud. Phosphorus Is by Walriki, a son of Soulf, Jolie Fllle, Admiral Soult. St. Amans. Selection and Worcester are all by Souit. and Tangiwai, Gloy and Goldmount by Gluten. The St. Paul mare Valentine is now an inmate of W. Sharp's stable. The same trainer has also been given Signature (which has been having a month or two's spell) to train, and intended bringing the son of St. Amans back with him after the Paeroa meeting. Lucky Bean, which ran unplaced in the Xewraarket Handicap, is known in Victoria as the "Country Carbine," end the title is said to be a well-merited one Though on'y a little fellow, and never subjected to ary orthodox method of training, he carries big weights with remarkable success at country meetings. Between his racing engagement Lucky Bean Is not infrequently employed in the work of rounding np s-Heep. That being so. Lucky Scan has established a n o?al record, for it is doubtful if ever a candidate for the greatest sprint or the Commonwealth has been associated with the ordinary work of a station. AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. Nominations for all events to be decided at the Avondale Jockey Club's Antumu Meeting on April 14 and IT. close with the secretary, 'Mr .H. H. Hayr, on Thursday, April 1, by 0 p.m. THE EASTER HANDICAP. The Easter Handicap is not claiming a great deal of attention at present, and matters in connection with the big mile race jare very quiet. Certain indications point to King Lupin retaining bis position as favourite, for outside the chances of lie Waikato horse nothing is really seriously discussed. An acceptance Is due next week, and the Intentions of owners which also have horses, engaged at Chrlstchurch will be better known, in which case increased interest will be sure to follow. Most ot the local contingent are'wen forward in the matter of condition, and the fast work during tbe next fortnight should be well worth watching, while tbe arrival ot the visitors , will brighten things up considerably. AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. The Auckland Trotting Clnb are ont with a roost attractive programme for their autumn meeting, ami, as with previous programmes this season, a big advance bas been made in the matter of stakes. The principal event, the Campbell Handicap, which is run on the opening day, carries a stake of 300sovs, while the Liverpool Handicap, on the second day, is endowed with a stake of 250sovs. Both these events are down to a 4.48 limit. Tbe Cornwall Handicap and Barn- Handicap are .each worth 200sovs, aud with the exception of the maiden events, the lowest stake for which is "osovs, nothing on the programme is under lOOsovs. In all £2330 will be given away on tbe two days, which is easily a record in the history of the dab. MORE FOB SYDNEY. Although New Zealand Is held up as the ideal spot for racing, owners with bloodstock for sale evidently have not much faith in the Dominion "as a market, and seem to prefer Australia. . At the forthcoming Kaster sales several New Zealand studs nave lots to offer, and the horses which Mr H. Frledlander intends to offer for sale In Sydney at Easter will be shipped next . week. The' contingent will consist of Carolus, by Charlemagne ll.—Nautiloid; Patroclus, by Achilles —Success; Martinmas, by Martian —Lady Lochiel Ingelhelm, by Charlemagne ll.—Fasnakyle; Applies, by Sea ton Delaval—Anadyoemene; Hera, by Penury—Hesperian; colt by-Marble Arch — Seatonella; Czarevna, by Stepniak—Britomart; Lady Lochiel (with foal by Boniform), by Formosan —Miss Lochiel; Kdttaii, by Soult—St. Edith;. Fasnakyle, by Clanranald—Teredina; Miss Kolmar, by Birkenhead—Cauntess of Kolmar; and May Dairy in pie, by Stepniak—Miss Dairy mple. Czarevna, Lady Lochiel, Editah nnd Fasnakyle are- in foal to Boniform and Miss Kolmar, and May DalrympTe to Elysian. . IX-AXD-OUT FORM. i "On leaving the course after the Final Handicap,", says "Terlinga," "a gentleman who has been punting at Flemington for close on 50 years remarked that this autumn meeting had been the 'most up and down one'- be conld call, to mind. It certainly must have been a very bad one for most backers. Some of the horses were in a very in-and-out mood. Traquette made absolutely no show in tbe Newmarket, and then won two nice? in brilliant style. Carlit i ran two very bad races, and then outgalloped tbe two favourites in the Champion Stakes. I have never heard any better reason given for Traquette's failure in the Newmarket than that she slipped about in the loose going at the start, and would not gallop afterwards. She certainly dashed out like a flyer in her other races, and in the Bonrke Handicap, .when collared near the end, she ran on without a* sign of flinching, and won well. Traquette is a great marc up to a mile, but tbis season four of her defeats have been most disastrous to backers. At Flemington in October she started at 5 to 4 for a race, and was beaten half a head. In the Guineas she was at even money, and her supporters got no run. Slip made a plunge as the barrier rose, and unshipped her jockey. In the Windsor Handicap - she. failed badly when backed down to 7 to 4. The Newmarket failure made the fourth costly race for the poor punters. There mnst always be some luck in ii big sprint with 25 runners, and Blague won so easily that it is bard to imagine how' he could have been beaten, hut In the All-aged Stakes Traquette outpaced and out-stayed him, and Mr Kawdon's <"olt never looked better. Land of Song's defeat in the Loch Plate was another crushing blow to those who lay odds on a supposed certainty. It was not tbe horse's fault this time. The race was thrown away by Land of Song's rider, but tbat is no consolation to the horse's backers.' , OPUXAKE RACES. At the Opunake Races, on the 16th inst., the big event of loOsovs was won by Styrax, with Lad of Gowrle and :>gapoto in the places. Time, 2.14 1-5.
