DEFICIT OF £2,70a,000. INCREASING THE TAXES. . (Received 9.50 &.m.) CAPETOWN, March 19. The Minister of Finance, Mr. J. C. Smuts, has submitted his budget to the House. It provides a special war-tax to produce £500,000, which will be levied upon the mines. The expenditure for the year was £11,406,000. A deficit of £2,702,000 will be met by an increase of Customs and Excise duties, reducing the exemption limit of the income tax to £300, and increasing the scale of the tax.
