TAUMAKUNUTS STRENUOUS [PROTEST. " (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI. this day. A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce considered a schedule of proposed freights and fares on the Wanganui River under the new contract. The meeting entered a strong .protest against the- present- form of-contract and insisted that no tender be let which does not recognise the schedule submitted by th e Chamber as the maximum on the upper reaches of the river. The meeting further requested the Mayor to call a public meeting- -to protest, and that a deputation from the Chamber visit Wellington and interview the Premier. Various speakers emphasised the unfair conditions as favouring Wanganni against Taomarnuui. It was stated that wire coet 50/ a ton over 100 miles up, and £4 a ton over 300 miles 3bwn.
