WAIKUMETE CEMETERY.

a ■ IMPROVEMENT'S AND ADDITION*". A report was submitted by the City Engineer to the Council last night in connection with the proposals to improve and extend Waikumete Cemetery. He recommended: (1) That the strip ot I | land between the railway, the Waikumete West Coast Road, and the creek be leased; (2) that with reference to the land north of the railway, not at present used for cemetery purposes, (a) tenders for clearing, ploughing, and | grasuing immediate cemetery extensions be invited as soon as plans showing location of road are received; (b) that the I remainder of the property be put up i for lease; (c) that tenders be called for the fencing necessary in connection with I the proposed extension of leasing. The employment of an extra man w I authorised by the committee, and the City Engineer was instructed to consider the question of improvement of paths, of which there are some eight miles, exclusive of roads in the cemetery. In view of the fact that the cemetery revenue is not sufficient to maintain it in the condition in which it is desirable snch a place should be kept, the committee decided to review the scale ol charges," with, .a view to recommending such' increase as will enable the work of maintenance and improvement to be more adequately kept. It was resolved -to adopt the report subject to the title being perfected, and to ask the landscape gardener to earnout a* much planting as possible during the coming season. The Town Clerk was also instructed to write for charges at other local cemeteries, and at Karon Cemetery, Wellington.
