! ACTIVITY IN AUCKLAND. QUESTION OF MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION". It was stated at a meeting- of the Belgian Fund Committee yesterday afternoon that there is still a sum of £4,000 in hand, and that a proposal had been made that this should be held in hand -in case there should he a falling-ofT in the regular monthly contributions from the Auckland province. The meeting was attended by the Acting-Consul fMr. llobt. Burns), Messrs. Neville Newcomb. Stewart Milne, and Wesley »Spragg. Some of the members favoured sending the money immediately to Wellington, and a resolution was car ried directing the secretary to ascertain from Wellington the exact amount which was required from the province. In referring to the results of the recent conference in Wellington. Mr. Spragg said that the Auckland dele- j gates had obtained all that had l>een | desired. The undertaking of the Govern. meiit to grant a £ for £ subsidy on all private donations was satisfactory. The Acting-Consul tabled letters which had been received from the Bel-, gian Legation and the High Commis-! sioner for New Zeajand. The letter stated that he had every reason to be- j . lieve that the funds which were sent to the Belgian Government were properly administered for the relief of the Belgian distressed. Votes of thanks were passed by the j committee to Dr. E. E. Porritt, of Wangunui, for the gift of some land, and to Mr. E. Holt for the donation of j 50 sheep. The committee also gratefully accepted the offer of the school teachers of Auckland to contribute £250 per! month. Mr. .1. V. Warren was elected to the executive to represent the teachers. A sub-committee was appointed toi confer with Mr. H. F.. Partridge relative to his gift of the Lindaucr collection of Maori paintings. Further consideration of ways and means of raising the monthly contribution from the Auckland district was deferred until a statement had be*" obtained as to what ummint the Government required.
