For some months past the district shown in this map has been the centre of constant lighting for position between the Germans, who hold La Bassee as well as Lens, and the British, who have been approaching it from Bethune along both sides of the canal. Some weeks ago we were told that Fsstubcrt. on the north ol the canal, and later that Vermelle, to the south, had been taken by the British. After that came violent German attacks on Givepchy and Guinchy, which were at first successful, but afterwards repulsed with heavy loss.
