SPEED OF CARS IN CORNWALL PARK.

(To the Editor.) Sir.—l crave a little space in your valuable medium to express views in connection with a complaint voiced by Mr. R. B. ' Spinks, at a meeting of the Auckland Automobile Association, wherein he states, that "Last Sunday, whilst having tea at the kiosk in the park, some cars were driven past at a speed of from 25 to 30 miles an hour, throwing up clouds of dust, which fell upon the tables. He counted seven cars, but they'were travelling so fast that he could not see-their numbers. All were taxis, however, as he noted the red index letter Ton each one." ... In the first p!ae;\ sir, I would point out that during the present national crisis there is not over much money being spent on motor cars, and the taxi drivers have to wait, in many instances, from early morning till late at night, on the taxi stand, to earn sufficient to keep going. When a taxi driver docs get a run for his car, and it happens to be through Cornwall Park, it is not likely that he is going to hurry over that "job" as quickly as he can (at » speed of 25 to 30 miles an hour). He is more likely to take his time, with a view to adding a few extra shillings to his fare. And even supposing he had to hurry through Cornwall Park, it perhaps didn't occur to Mr. Spiuks that at the spot described by him it is a matter of absolute impossibility for a car to travel at anything like 23 miles an hour. On the up grade there is a sharp bend just before the kiosk, and immediately after passing the kiosk there is a closed gate. The Automobile Association and its members must not shield itself and themselves by so clearly noting the small "T" on a taxi, which does not appear on a privately-owned car. It is safe to estimate that for every taxi that goes through Cornwall Park there are three privately-owned cars, each with the A.AA. on the radiator—and some persons incline to the opinion that it is the cars branded with A.AA. that disregard rules and regulations.—l am, etc., OUTSIDER
