i OJUJtEMinu J.C. MEETING. OPENING DAY'S RACIITO. WET AND UNPLEASANT. GLOT WINS THE CUP. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") PAEROA, Wednesday. The Obinemari Jockey Clnb opened their meeting at Paeroa yesterday in wet and unpleasant weather. The morning was dull and threatening, developing into rain before racing commenced, and continuing throughout the afternoon, making matters most unpleasant for the large attendance assembled. The racing, notwithstanding the adverse weather conditions, was interesting, the principal event, the OUnemuri Cup, being won by Gloy, which defeated the favourite (I'bosphorus) by a couple of lengths. After the race for the Steeplechase, Tntchcn, the rider of Scots Guard, and McFlinn. the rider of Webfoot, were cantloned for not making an effort to continue on after their mounts had run off. Mr Gordon, the stipendiary steward present, opened an inquiry into the running of Nicomar in the Maiden. Handicap, as compared with his effort In the Komata Handicap, the Inquiry being adjourned until Thursday. THE TOTE. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, tbe totalisator staff was kept bony. the sum of £14,003 passing through the machines, as against £11,434 last year, .in increase of £2.659. BLCEFORM AT LAST. The good field of fifteen saddled up for the opening event, the Maiden Handicap, the withdrawals being Glendina, Wairangl, Mangatete, Sir Rosa, Maid of Orleans, Soft Rock and Mason Bee. Nicomar was sent out a strong favourite, carrying about twice as much on his number as Don Castor and Blncform. which, were evenly backed, while a lot of money went on Hopye and Glenopal. There was some delay at tbe post, and Blueforni, which was second on the fence, got all the best of the dispatch, and going along tbe back was ont two lengths In front of Lady Lynette, Flying Feather and Don Castor, while the favonvitc and Hopye were a long way back. Crossing the top Blueforni was still striding along in front, and though Don Castor ran up second he had no chance with the leader, which won easily by two lengths. Lady Lynette was three lengths away, third, and then came Nicomar, Gluctan. Glenopal and I Hopye. The winner lias been racing for i some time, but this was his first victory. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. Master Wairikl and Maiii Nlda were the defections from the Netberton Welter, si dozen lining up' at the 'tape. Glenspite finished up favourite in a good betting race, Tararu Jack; Celebrity and Hamlet being well supported, while Semolina and. Pupnra also had friends. The ■ dispatch was a straggling one, Hamlet getting out with a break, and led along the back, followed by Pnpura, Bine Rose. Tararu Jack and Valentine in that order, the favourite being j last but two. Hamlet.-- making .'the most of his advantage, piloted tbe field «cross tbe top aud into the straight, and though he was stopping at the finish, lasted long enough to .win. by . half a length from Tararu Jack, .with the favourite,' w-hirli finished very fast from a long, way ,back; a similar distance away, third. Pupura was fourth, and then came Semolina and Parawai. Glenspire was. very unlucky, for had he got anything like a decent run must have won,. A NARROW VICTOR*. I When the field came oat for the Handicap Hurdles. Pip. Golden Glow, Merry Nimblefoot, and Valentine were absent, and Cloudy Dawn was cent out at odde-on*. ■Dogger Bank was a good'second favourite; and Revelation got support, but tbe others were only given an outside chance. The going, owing to the rain on the hard surface, was now on the greasy side, and when they had gone half a mile Dunskllten toppled over. A little further on Starwood came to grief, and going out of the straight I Sir Stroud came down, these mishaps occurring while they were- racing on the flab : When they were let go Revelation went put [ very fast, followed by 'Dogger Bank, the pair soon having a big break on the field, the favourite being a couple of hundred yarde away. Racing at the hurdle in the straight, Revelation slipped and made * faulty lump, and though he looked like recovering eoold not regain hie feet, and, los-' ing his rider, the mishap left Dogger Bank with a coimnantilng lead of Cloudy Dawn, which had rnn up geeond ; all Interest In the race being as to whether the favourite would catch the leader. Gradually he decreased the gap, and the pair rose at the Ust fence together. Once over, a desperate struggle reunited, Cloudy Dawn snatching a victory in the last stride" by a < head. Rnnrobih wae a hundred yards away, third, the others being a long way back. THE StotIXTBRS. T*e scratching pen was busy In' the Karangahake Handicap, Lady Middleton, Kauri King, Glad Tidings. Positive. Bogfy. Apellon, and Zen Die all remaining in their stables. .Notwithstanding these withdrawal*, the good field of eleven was still left, and Ihapuna wound up a good favourite, with Glenspring, Hlma, Manurere, Eminent, and Bine Garment all fancied. When they were let go, Manurere, next the rails, was quickest to begin, followed, by Ihapuna, Genevieve, and Eminent in that order. Creatine the top, Mtnurere still had charge jost in front of Ihapuna, <with tienevleve and Eminent most prominent of a bunched lot. At the distance Ihapuna put In his claim, and wearing down Manurere in the run to the Judge, got the verdict by half a length, Blue Garment, which finished fast after getting a bad passage, was a simnar distance away, third, just in front of Valambroea, Eminent, •Hlma, and Genevieve. GLOY WINS THE CUP. •Tuet on half the field carded, jolie Fille, ■Dornina. Admiral Soult, St. Amans. .md Tangawai felled 4o saddle up for the ohiueinuvi Cup, the principal event of the day, and of the half-dozen left Phosphorus was .sent out at odds-ou. Selection currying six hundred lees tickets, while Salvia wae nearly as well supported as the last-named, with Worcester, Gloy, and Goldmount backed in that order. Goldmoont being at a very long price. When they were let go. Selection went out to make the pace, but passing the stand .Salvia and Worcester .were on terms, the trio being three lengths In front of Gloy. wfth the favourite, which was nearly down as they left the straight, last. Going along tbe back Salvia and Worcester were in the lead, but the former's saddle slipped, and the mar*, starting to buck, was pulled up. At this stage Gloy ran through and took charge, leading across the top from Worcester, while the favo-jrite had ran up third. Gloy turned for home well clear, and though Phosphorus threw out a determined challenge in the ron to the judge, bad nfc change wits Gloy, which made some 'ameato tor put Mwn tg .wlniag bj a

Sandy Lmpiu, and Mason Bee dropping ont for some reason or other. Nlcomar was entrusted wttb. most snppott, a lot of money also going on Ghrepot. Brown Loch, end Hopye. The early was made by AWd Drop and Surrey I'ark, but when it came to racing Slcomar came tlrrongh and won easily by -three; length* trom an outsider in Carbiness, with iUnepot, which was nnlui'k.v. a length, away, taM. Brown tech was showing prominent]? ta the early etages, but died ont of it at the business end. Carbiness returned bar-ter supporters nearly a score {or their iiircalatents. OYLY THREES FINISH. Vestal and Ngatoa "were the only withdrawals from the Paexoa Steeplechase, which saw Swrtsguard seat on* a three hundred ticket better favocrHfcthart Barbwire, Coronade being a good third- fancy, the only other to get anything like decent support being Webfoot. Barbwire and Miss Curis were quickest to the flrst .fence, where Wsingaro whipped off, but passing the stand Scots Guard was In- front. .He ran off at the second fence of the doable, Webfoot following 'him. The race nosr resolved itself into a triangular duel between Coroude, Golden Glow, and- Barbwire, and after an Interesting run CoTonade got the verdict by a couple of lengths from Golden Glow, which wan a neck In front of Barbwire, these be tog the only ones to finish. A -MIEART DAI EJRDED. A wet, dreary day was concluded with tbe St. Patrick's Handicap, from vbjen, Achilledes, Glad Tidings, Salvia, and Carbinees were withdrawn. Monster was made very warm, Bine Garment and ledy Middleton being fairly evenly supported, while Gallupin also had plenty of friends. They were kept a long -while at the poet, and there was some chopping about when they jumped off.
