CONDENSED CORRESPONDENCE.
i Mr. E. T. Evants, writing on the subject of church attendance, attributes the falling off to the failure of the church of to-day to preach the unadulterated gosped. as was done in the early centuries of Christianity, and to the division of the church into many sects, which encourages disbelief. He thinks the remedy lies in the active interposition of the laity and their meeting together for the study of the New Testament without the aid of a paid clergy. He adds: "Permanent improvement of the material condition of the labouring class depends mainly, if not entirely, upon the visible 'unity of the church, and the power which I unity gives to gospel preaching. If the i masses of this country embraced the gospel and went about preaching it as the earliest Clrrisrtians did. monopoly and I privilege would soon vanish. Mr. Rosser .md his brotlier trade unionists, also the Socialists and single tasters, arc taking I the line oi greatest .resistance. The easiest a«nl shortest cut to the most delightful earthly parad-ise imperfect mor- | talis can win is the gospel way. This. hicSeed. is the teaching of Jesus Christ in the sermon on the Mount." Mr. John Harding, of Howe Street, writing on the conviction of Lady Ida Sitwell for fraud, states tlr.it for eight years he was a gardener in the employ of Sir G. R. Sitwell at Remehaw Hall, Derbytehire. wlio "is one of the finest noblemen in England," generous and considerate for his workpeople and tenantfe. He save:—There were six gardeners coastantly employed, and about 12 or more woodmen. The rent roll was £19,000 when I was there, so you will see there wae no reason for Lady Ida to do as she has done, but she had fits of "I don't care."
