FODDER DEAR AND SCARCE.
MELBOURNE, this day. A deputation of users of fodder pointed out to the Minister of Agriculture that a year ago chaff was procurable at £3 15/- a ton, but now stood at £10 10//-. It was calculated tiiat there would be a shrinkage of 200,000 tons of the fodder stocks of Victoria. Prices did not show any tendency to ease. The Minister of Agriculture replied there was not much hope of relief. The Government was importing lucerne from California at £S 10/- landed cost. Chaff had been bought in New Zealand at £."> to £5 15/-. but bagging, freight, and other charges brought the cost to £9 to £9 5/- landed in Melbourne. There were also risks in importing from different countries owing to various stock diseases that might be introduced.
