WELLINGTON, March 16. The High Commissioner reports under date London. March 16, 2.55 a.m.: Paris reports that the day was marked by a number of gains by the Allies. The Germans tried to recapture a small fort, which was carried by the Allies on Thursday night, but were repulsed, leaving 55 dead. South of Ypres the British were compelled to fall back from a trench taken yesterday, but they regained the trench notwithstanding many counter-attacks. North of Arras the Allies' infantry, in a brilliant attack, captured at one bound three lines of trenches, ami took 100 prisoners and munitions of war. In the region of Curie Roclincourt. the Allies blew ,-up several German trenches, and prevented the enemy reconstructing others. In the region of Albert the Germans exploded a mine under the Allies' trench and occupied the position, but the Allies regained it. In the valley of the Aisne. north-west of Ouvron, two German companies, under fire, suffered great losses. In the Champagne the Allies gained ground north-east of Souain and north west of Perthes. In the region of Bagatelle an enemy's blockhouse was demolished, and the site occupied. In a wood at La Petre. north-west of Pont-a-Mousson, the Germans destroyed by a mine four of the Allies' advanced trenches, but the greater part of the position was regained.
