ATHLETICS.

UNDER XORTiHBRN UNION RULES. Record nominations hav c been received for the St. Patrick's Day sports, which are to be held on the Domain Cricket Ground to-morrow. There are several new items on the programme of general events. For girls, Highland dancing has been added, and for boys attending the public schools as well as for those of private institutions, a championship race of 100 yards will be held. This is open to pupils of all schools, and 13 creating considerable interest amongst senior pupils. Since its registration as tbe athletic governing body for the Auckland Province, the union has decided that the rules and regulations adopted -for dancing events, both Scottish and Irish, must be strictly enforced. Next season no Irish dancing will be permitted where tbe proper costumes are not worn. This applies to both sexes. At to-morrow's sport* Miss Campbell will dance' the jig in the real Irish costume. This young lady, who is the holder of championship medals, will be the first in Auckland to conform with the new order, and doubtless the many natives and descendants of Ireland will be very keenly interested. The stage or guy costumes will disappear alter to-morrow.

!Sow that the Northern Athletic Union has decided to foster Highland dancing there has been a boom in those events throughout the province, and an additional official judge has been appointed in the person of Mr. H. Patience. This gentleman is best known in Australia and Southern parts of 'New Zealand, and will act in the official capacity for the first time to-morrow. Mr. Patience will also officiate at the Papakura gathering on Easter Monday.

The great increase in sports meetings under the union this year has led a well-known employer of labour to have a good-natured tilt at the union over it The union has been assured on several that were it not for the clean, healthy sport, under proper control, employers would not agree to athletes getting off to attend meetings. Close to town two meetings a week has been a common occurrence, while this week thre e will be held. The above businessman remarked: "I am an old sport myself, and have watched the union's effort^ on behalf of good sport, but when it comes to letting the chaps off three times a week —hang it all. it is as had a3 a srj-ike." .He advocated having only ; one meeting a week within, say, 100 'miles of Auckland.

The Ohaupo Athletic Club's sports on Saturday were a great success. .AH events were keenly contested. The cup race was won by M. B. Ward, of Auckland.

At the 'Pukekawa sports on Saturday there were 23 starters in the big chop which was won by D. Pretty. Since the union asumed control of chopping, these events have always been important draws. The cup race at Pukekawa was won by J. O'Connell, of Otahuhu. HUNTLY SPORTS HANDICAPS.
