AUXILIARY YACHT'S FLAG.

'GERMAN STATEMENT DENIED. " BINDER THE WHITE ENSIGN. WELLINGTON, this day. The High Commissioner reports, under Hate of London, 12th March, 5.40 pjn.:— The Admiralty make the following announcement: FT.M.s. Vanduara, an auxiliary armed vessel, engaged a German submarine in the Irish Sea. on Ist February. The German Government allege that she showed no colours before firing. The commanding officer of the Vanduara reports: i- At the time I was flying no colours, but hoisted the white ensign before opening fire."' As fire was opened at about 3,000 yards, and the yacht altered her course to bring her bow on to the submarine, which submerged when two thousand yards away, it is clear "that there could be no justification for the positive statement on the part of the officer of the submarine that no flag was flown. The Germans claim that a yacht opened fire on one of their submarines without showing any flag, and therefore alleged that they were entitled to sink any vessel publicly or privately owned in the so-called -war zone" which they declared sound the coasts of the British Isles.
