THE NEW RAILWAY OUTLET: A PROPOSED MODIFICATION.
The above maps are designed to show how the proposals made for new railway lines out of the city eastward can be secured advantageously without the sacrifice of the foreshore and the sandy bay that is the great attraction of Parnell Park, which is involved in Mr. Hiley's scheme of improvements. The proposals of the Railway Department, which have never been put in proper detail before the public, provide for a railway from the foot of Eden Street across St. George's Bay, through the end of Campbell's Point, across Judge's Bay. round or through Point Resolution, and then by straight embankment to Qrakei bridge. This involves the shutting in of the whole coast, the destruction of headlands, beach, etc. The alternative route sketched above offers no obstacles, a\id would save the coast from destruction. The suggestion is for a line from Eden Street to the foot of St. George's Bay Road, thence to near Albion Street, from the level to deep cutting, thence to Hobson Bay Road by tunnel of 30 chains, theiice to Qrakei bridge by straight embankment in shallow water. It is pointed out that the spoil for Mr. Hiley's embankment, a much deeper one than that closer to the land, would necessarily be constructed with spoil from a considerable distance, unless the destruction of the headlands is contemplated. Under the alternative scheme the tunnel will provide much spoil for the embankment, a comparatively shallow one. The sketch map of the route is accompanied by an elevation plan, showing that there ia no difficulty : ~ ~
