*Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hume, of Wellington, arrived in Auckland yesterday, and are putting up at Cargen.

Dr. Elizabeth Macdonald, senior housesurgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, has .been appointed medical inspector of schools for the Auckland district.

Mr. H. J. Wynne, chief electrical engineer to the Government Railway" Department, arrived in Auckland - this morning, and is staying at Cargen.

Mr. 11. H. Ostler, of the Crown Law Office, is resigning (our Wellington cor--1 respondent reports) in order to join the legal firm of Messrs. Jackson and Russell, for this city.

I Our Wellington correspondent advises that the Hon. J. Allen, Minister of I Finance, will leave for Gisborne toImorrow, and will go on to Auckland on Saturday night.

Mr. E. H. Hiley, General Manager of Railways, has been on a visit of inspection in the province, and was due to arrive at Auckland to-day. Mr. and Mrs. Hiley wHI stay at the Grand Hotel.

Lieutenant-Colonel 0". E. Hume, officer commanding the district, % at present on' a visit of inspection to the training camp of the Coast Defence Infantry at Brown's Bay. Major Macdonald, general staff officer, is at the camp of the North Auckland Mounted Rifles at Whangarei.

The Hon. Geo. Fowlds left by tbe noon express to-day for Wellington. During his stay in the Empire City he will represent tbe Auckland centre of St. John Ambulance Association at the conference by the Government to consider the question of overlapping in the raising of funds for relief and patriotic purposes. \

One of tbe officers on the new battleship Queen Elizabeth, which is engaged in tbe operations in the Dardanelles, is Lieutenant . McCullock, of Pohangina County (Wanganui). Lieutenant McCullock was farming there when war broke out, but, having previously seen service in the navy, he volunteered for active service, and ■was accepted.

Passengem for Wellington by the express to-day included the Auckland delegates to the conference of committees administering the various war relief funds. The" party comprised Mr.' and Mrs. Robert Burns, Mrs. Smith (St. John Ambulance), Messrs. Geo. Elliot, and Wesley Spragg, the Hon. Geo. Fowlds, and Messrs. -E. Anderson and' J. S. Milne.

I Lieutenant R. E. Melsome, RJC.R., wellknown in New Zealand shipping circles ■as second officer of the Rimutaka and 1 other ships, was. drowned on 17th January while on special service on the I British Admiralty tug Char, near the I Goodwin Sands, in connection with the Dover petrol. The Char had gone to the assistance of the Belgian tank steamer ' Erivan, but was 'holed in going alongside, and was lost with all hands.

Lieutenant W. A. Burn, N.Z.S.C., who ie at present adjutant of the Third (Auckland) Regiment, has' been Instructed to report -himself -at Wellington, where, it is understood, he will receive orders to proceed to England to take service with the Royal Flying Corps. Lieutenant «Burn, mho is-a Christchurch man, was the New Zealand officer chosen for special training at Home in aviation, He had teft for New Zealand just before war broke out.
