THE VISITING SWIMMERS.

CTo the Editor.) Sir . —Jus* now we haw in Auckland the two great Hawaiian swimmers. Duke Kahanamoku artd George Cunha, the firstnamed being the absolute speed champion of the world so far as sprinting is concerned, and the other the speediest white man that we have any record of. New Zealand has also some worthy exponents jof the natatorial art, and Auckland has, in the absence of Malcolm Champion, the Dominion champion in C. Welson; and with that knowledge, many Aucklanders wended their way to the Albert Street ; Baths to see a contest between the great Duke and our local best; but how few were not disappointed when they learnt that the Duke's manager would not n"iec to the Hawaiian wonder swimming against Welson because the latter swam under a protest a few weeks ago. in Napier, the result of some little technical triviality that happened in Waihi. Welson, at the Napier meet, won the first event on the programme, the mile, and some Southerners immediate! v entered the abovementioncd protest, but "the protesting ones still continued to swim against Welson in the succeeding events, and the matter is still left in abeyance. Another matter in connection with the galas is that the prices of admission to to-night's carnival at the Albert Street Baths were outrageous, viz., •>/, 3/, and 2/. Unless a material reduction is- made the succeeding carnivals will turn out a financial frost.—l am, etc., vf , „., NATATOB. March 9th.
