THE SILENCE OF GOD.

An aCmirable address was delivered by the Rev. A. Fowler at the Lenten service in the Chamber of Commerce during the luncheon hour to-day. Bishop Averill -was amongst those present. The speaker took for his subject "Silence," and pointed out how Moses was chosen ,for a great work, but died without apparently seeing much result, for his labours. It was the same "with the early Christian martyrs, who seemed to pass away without having accomplished anything, but in -every instance-the" work of God went on all the same. The speaker emphasised the fact that a thousand years are but as a day in God's sight. Touching upon the war, Mr. Fowler said it might be thought that God was silent while his people suffered, but the speaker contended even here were neen" evidences-that His work was steadily going on. In the past Great Britain and its church had trained men in justice and righteousness, -then sent them forth to- other lands. The -beneficial result of this was, he claimed, to be seen in the .present war, by the way the coloured races governed by Great Britain were manifesting their loyalty "by rallying round to assist -in fighting the 'battles of -the Empire, in the war now in progress. /
