STOLE FOR THE POOR.
Fred Hoyt, choir singer '.in a Bowtry mission (New York); who; pleaded guilty to the theft of £300 in jewellery from an apartment house, sought "the' courPs clemency on the plea- that' fie stole only to benefit the poor. :Hoyt.'had stolen altogether about £S0O; Till of which he had given to the poor, except barely enough to pay his own Tjoard.. iHe had not benefited beyond thte by any of his thefts. The money was given out Jn small sums, according to his story, among the Bowery's homeless men, to enable theni to get food and lodging. His method of distributing It was to stand, after sei'vice'6, at the doorway of the mission, where he. had snng, and bestow coins on the departing worshippers.
