ONLY TRAINED MEN WANTED

The official notice from the Defence, Department, inviting applications from volunteers for service in New Zealand and (if required) abroad, confirms theannouncement previously made that preference will he given to members of the various branches of the territorial force. Failing a sufficient supply of volunteers from this source, including, of course, the Garrison Artillery, the Staff Corps, and the Permanent Staff, applications will be considered from others who have had previous military experience, and are between the ages of 20 and 35 years. Preference will be given to single men. and no one will be accepted who has not reached the age of 20 years, or who exceeds 12 stone in weight. Exceptions with respect to age and weight may be made in special cases. The applications to volunteer will bo received under the following categoreis:— (a) The Regiment of Royal New Zealand Artillery, the N.Z. Staff Corps, and the N.Z. Permanent Staff. (b) Territorials now serving, over 20 years of age, including those on the Unattached Lists (a) and (b). (The unattached list includes officers who are efficient and for whom there are no vacancies, and officers who arc scrvin<* with Senior Cadets). (c) The Territorial Reserve. (d) Failing a sufficient supply of volunteers from these sources, applications from others, with previous military exparie.nee, between the ages of 20 and 35 years, will he entertained. Such volunteers must be primarily enlisted into an existing territorial unit.

Applications to volunteer will be made to District Headquarters, but applicants will save a great deal of trouble and unnecessary clerical adjustment if they will note the proper procedure to be followed.

Men of the territorials and the territorial reserve will forward their applications through their squadron, battery or company commanders. Many have already done so. taking the opportunity at recent parades. Territorial officers will apply through their Regimental Commanding officers and the usual channels; and the unattached oflieers. will apply through the Group Commanders. \ppliconls from the general training section and all others will also make their aoplications through the Group Commanders at Auckland, Hamilton, Whangarei or Paeroa. Each volunteer for mounted rifles (and a man -may volunteer only for the branch of service in which he has been trained) will be required to bring his own horse and a complete set of saddlery. Horses must he from four to seven years, sound and from fourteen and a-half to fift-en and a-half hands. No greys, duns or light, chestnuts will be accepted ' and geldings are to be preferred. The horse and saddlery are to remain the proper'v of the owner, but will be taken over at valuation if the force is sent out of New Zealand.
