THE LICENCING POLL.
JTo the Ed!tor.> Sir.—On my return to Auckland mv attention has been drawn to a letter on tlie above subject wftlicll appeared in your issue of Tuesday last, in which I am charged with making a statement at the recent deputation of the. Licensed Hotel trade to the Right "Hon. the Premier. The report which appeared in the Auckland "Star" of tlie 2nd inst. reports mt> as having stated: "the total votes cast at last el/ction for Prohißition -were short by 04,072 of the threefifths majority." What I really did say was: '-That ii'ne total votes recorded for National -Prohibition were short of a three-fifths majority of the total electors or the roll of tlie Dominion by 94.082 votes, and that even a 00 per cent majority of the total votes polled would not be a bare majority of the total number of electore on tlhe rolls." This statement is borne out by the pitbfc report which appeared in the Wellington Prens, and also in the national records <if th-j Dominion. —I am, eto.. ALFRED S. BAXKART.
