CITY SOLICITORSHIP.
APPOINTMENT OF 5m J. STANTOX On the subject of the appointment of a city solicitor the Finance and Legal Committee, in reporting to tbe Auckland City Council last evening, expressed tie opinion that the invitation of applications would be irregular, and recommended that the acting-city solicitor (Mr J, Stanton) be appointed. Mr R. T. Michaels took the view that the procedure suggested by the committee was not a desirable one. He had no objection to Mr Stanton. but the matter involved a broad principle. Die Mayor pointed out that the position was defined by the standing orders, but Mr Michaels urged that the matter of inviting applications should be diicussed.
The Council went into committee to make explanations with rejrard to tbe view adopted by the committee. Subsequently the Mayor said he was advised that if the applications had been invited no solicitor of standing would iave made application, as it would be an infringement, of professional etiquette. Mr Stanton was a youn<r man. but experienced and capable, and no doubt in important matters the assistance of counsel would bo obtained. "[ believe in encourneinjr youn;r men." added his Worship. Tlio report v.as then adopted.
