CONFLAGRATION IN SALEM. DAMiGE TOTALS £4,000,000. STOPPED BY DYNAMITE. (By Cable—Press Association—ConyrismV NEW YORK. -Tune -2o\ Nearly one-half of the city of Salem (Massachusetts), with its rich and historic buildings, has been devastated by a fire, which caused the loss of £4,000,000. The tire destroyed 1.000. buildings, including a score of manufacturing establishments. It also made about. 10,000 of the 45.000 inhabitants of the. city homeless. The. file originated in a leather factory, and swept through Dv. shoe-leather district, ruining every building in a curving path two miles long ami half a mile wide. The embers started a lire in two sections ot (lie fashionable residence districts. For a time Uie whole city seemed doomed. Several buildings were dynamited, nnd every available line of hose directed against the approaching (lames. No fatalities are reported, but 50 injured people have, been received in the hospitals.
