OTAGO MEDICAL SCHOOL.
StJBSiDIES ON BEQUESTS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUXEDTX, Sunday. Two matters relating to the Otago ■Medical School were placed before the •Minister for Public Health (the Hon. ft. H. Rhodes) yesterday by a deputation from the Ot»g*> University Council. Mr. C. M. Thomson. M.P., explained that the council wished to impress upon Hie Minister the desirability of purchasing a piece of land in Great King Street, *'hich the Council thought the Minister could assist the Council to secure, for the proposed extension of the medical School. The other question was that of State subsidies upon liequeets. At pTeeent money donations to the university or the medical school and other institutions carried a subsidy of "34/ in the pound, 'but bequeets did not yield tnat subvention. The deputation desired to •have bequeete placed on the same footing as ordinary donations.
Referring to the tpublic subscriptions to the university and the hospital in Dunedin, Mr. Rhodes said the w*o!e of New Zealand was aware of the noWe way in which the citizens of Dunedin frad given to the cause of education and to the hospital. He w*s quite awart that the people of Dunedin had set an exwmple to the other centres of the Dominion. "Aβ long ac I am at the head of the Department," added the Minister, "I shall endeavour with you. Your Tequest appears to v* a reasonable one, but I cannot gi , '* i definite reply just now, as it requires consideration. As thp matter involve! a grant, it ■will 'have to £0 3x>fore the Cabinet. I think you have justice o-i year Bide when you ask that the amount subscribed for the -la-boratory should carry the ueua.l subsidy. The general question of subsidies following 'bequests is a matter of policy, and will have to be dealt with by the Cabinet."
