A PHENOMENAL RAINFALL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, Tuesday. Heavy rain has fallen over the eastern seaboard "from the East Oa-pe to Mania Peninsula. At Gisborne the total for the month has reached 5.60 in., which is the greatest quantity of rain that has fallen for any one month during the past two years. Owing to a washout on the railway to-day the train (for the north could not get beyond Otoko, a small country centre, and lady passengers ihad to De accommodated in the. A Teport from Port Awanui states that the Waiapu River is in heavy flood, and is causing loss of sheep, but the extent of the damage & not yet known. The .water is nearly up to tie decking of the Wa,ia.pu 'bridge, and both approaches have been washed away. The river is now going down.
