GOLD AND THE RAND.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—"Matabele Wilson," interviewed in Melbourne, said that if the South African strike continues the whole of the three .hundred thousand natives employed in the mines ■will have to be sent back to the kraals. That would mean a cessation of the whole mining industry, md it would be years before the mines were again worked. It : ha3 lately been remarked' that the supply of gold, enormous as it has been, thanks to South Africa, is not by any means equaJ to the demand. The Rand last year produced one-third of the world's output. I ask what will be the effect on the debtor community should the Johannesburg mines close down.—l am, etc., H.J.
