Mrs Van de.r Velden. widow of the deerased artist, returns to Wellington on Monday next. Mr. W. D. M. Clai-ter, solicitor, of Auckland, was admitted yesterday as a barrister of the Supremo Court bY his Honor Mr. .lustice Cooper, on the application of Mr. F. J. Stilling. The Rev. ]•'. Stubbs. who Iras hsen travelling considerably iv l.lie Northern hemisphere, is at present in America. He expects to return to New Zealand at the end of next. year. At a meeting of members and adherents of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Ashburton, held last evening, it was decided to tender a call to the charge u> Rev. Shearer. New York; Mr W. .Spear, of Wellington, who are. staying at the Star Hotel. Colonel A. W. Robin. C.8., who has been representing tiie Dominion at the War Office, is returning to N-0.-k- Zealand next month. Major CI. S. Richardson, who is at present at the. .Slaff College, Camberlry, will succeed the Colonel. j A pioneer settler passed away at Foxton last night in the person of Mrs Symons. rcjict of the late Mr I. 11. Symon.s, at the age of TH years. She arrived with her husband at Wellington in IS4O, and eight years latter scaled in Foxton, where the family have since rei sided. A family of 10 survive, and there arc a/bout 50 grandchildren.—Press Association. Miss Jvclith Llowe-s, authoress of "The Sun's Ha-ltie-s," -Fairy Rings," "Rainbow Children," etc., is on a visit to Auckland. She attended the Traiuing College this morning, and told a number of fairy stories to the. children of the Primer classes, before -all the students a-< an audience. iMisa Howes has a charming manner with children, and her way of interesting them was a fine object-lesson to the student*, who were, unstinted in their expressions of appreciation. Mr Augustus R. Hyncs, who has been a student in the mechanical engineering department of the Technical College, Auckland, since March, lflOS. ha-s been appointed engineering instructor at the Napier Technical College, the salary beginning at £200 per annum. During the time. that he tras been a student, at the Auckland Technical College, Mi Hvnea has passed many examinations in engineering subjects held by the Board of Education, London, and the City and Guilds of London Institute.
