STRIKERS' DEMONSTRATION.

THE BEST FIGHTEHS ALL FOREIGNERS. (By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The strikers held a demonstration at Petone last night. .Stress was laid by Mr Savage upon the fact that the workers could only win this tight by reason. An appeal to force might have its effect, but at tlie best it would be only temporary. The speaker declared that trade in Auckland was absolutely and would remain so until the strike was settled. Mr P. Hickey (secretary of the Federation of Labouri denied that the body was a. foreign organisation. He admitted' that some nf its members were foreigners, and declined that the best fighters on the side of the strikp in Wellington were all foreigners—Germans. Frenchmen, I>.ui'-s. Scandinavians and Del.iians. They were by far the best fighters" and they'were to be respected far more than the New Zealandprs. THE CANTERBURY CAMP. FREE LABOUKEKS AND " SPECIALS. '' ONE THOUSAND MEN WANTED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHUHCII. Thursday. Free labourers as I hey sjg n on are being quartered at the Addington show grounds, where they cut. -loop and associate with special constables, and really enjoy the privileges uf the p'.iid Government servants who have enrolled for special police duty. There i- m uch comment on the fact'that the free labourers are being billeted in tlic same camp as the special constables, and one critic Iras remarked that it is difficult to tell the labourers from the preservers of law and order. Current rumour is to the effect that no attempt will be made to invade Lyttelton with free iubour and specials until the whitc-badged police army reaches a thousand. There are at the Addington camp to-night approximately 000 men. made up of 150 infantry or short baton men. foot specials, and about 400 mounted men. There are 100 bell tents erected in the camp, and to-night forces arrived from Cheviot and Omihi, while men have arrived' this afternoon from as fs.r south as Waimate. It is expected that no move will be made towards the port until Monday. To-day a number of young men from offices in the city and several solicitors were enrolled for service in Lyttelton and Christchurch, cither as free labourers or as specials, and very few offices of any size hnve not been drawn on. The banks have offered men, and if the strike continues many business places veil! be shorthanded.
