BISHOP CLEARY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The important announcement contained in the "Star" of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Clearj-'s selection as Dignisehnue for the position of Coadjutor-Archbishop of South Australia sent a thrill of pride and exultation to the hearts of hie people here. To those c-utsid* of his flock who have the privilege of knowing and esteeming him, the honour conferred upon him will, I am sure, be cordially approved. When the priests of Auckland conferred upon him the position of Dignissimus, Bishop Cleary was away on the American Continent, nobody knew where. He was chosen then, as now, because of his splendid erudition and high ecclesiastical bearing, combined with a profound knowledge of the world and its many-sided controversies. His diocesans are justly and rightly proud of him, and if they are tofose him it will be with keen and lasting regret, but their great lose will be somewhat alleviated by the knowledge that hie well-merited advancement will be in the interests of the church generally. As a prelate and as a citizen he is a decided acquisition to any community. Like all genuine geniuses, he is the embodiment of humility, and is approachable by the humblest; while he exercisee an exalting influence upon those with whom his lot is east. May his useful life be long spared.—l am. etc., A CATHOLIC.
