He lived for years in apparent poverty, but after his death it was discovered that he owned property valued at £30,000. He bequeathed £650 to his relatives and £50 to the Ballarat Hospital. The balance of the estate goes to found Robbie Scholarships in eheraistry, mathematics, and natural philosophy at the Aberdeen University.
