Sir Oliver I.odge"s presidential address to the British Association will combat the new school of physicists, who dispute the universality of ether in favour of the theory of relativity. The universality of the ether is at present accepted as tiie foundation of many physical phenomena, such, for instance, as light, but in recent years there h-us arisen a theory of -relativity which throws doubt upon the accural-"'/ of many of the conclusions hitherto artrived at by physicists, amongst which the universality of the ether is to be reckoned.
