AND A PLUCKY SAVE.

Promptness and plnck -were the essentials in stopping a thrilling runaway in Shortland Street about noon to-day. A cab belonging to Messrs Pullan and Armitage, and in charge of the wellknown driver, David Stewart, wae efcanding in front of the Waihi Company , ! office, the pair of'horeee toeing headed uphill. Stewart was sitting in his cab with the roof down, cleaning one of the doors. Something occurred to etartle the horses, and they suddenly turned right round and daehed down the incline, β-afely passing the etring-'Of cabe lined down the centre and eidee of the street, and reaching the Queen Street intersection. In the meantime, Stewart had clambered over the eeat, and was lying flat down on the foot-hoard in an endeavour to get possession of the rein*, which were securely fastened below. This he managed to do as the runaway got on to the tramway crossing, and regaining his seat and control oi the 'horses, Stewart steered the, bolting animals up the steep grade into Swaneon Street, where they were coon brought to a standstill. The incident gave a thrill ■to <the spectators while it laeted, and the quick-witted and adventurous act of the driver -wae appreciatively applauded.
